November Meeting Report

New York, NY - The Parent Assembly’s November meeting started with the presentation of the New York City Magic Week Proclamation by our Secretary Jeremy Medows to our President Don Engstrand. Jeremy read a report by our Second Vice President, Bruce Lish, who produced Magic Week for the Assembly. Bruce and Jeremy, as well as Richard Bossong, James Stranges, and other were singled out for volunteering their performances for the disabled and those confined to hospital beds.

It was announced that our December after-meeting show will be on Mentalism produced by Ross Wasielke. Dr. Ken Kenzel gave a brief report on our monthly workshop. Then came First Vice President Ken Schwabe’s report on this year’s Salute to Magic coming up this April. He had a big announcement as well. The Dean of the Parent Assembly, Sam Schwartz, will be honored as our Magician of the Year during this year’s show. Ken is very secretive about the acts he has booked but I can tell you it will be a blockbuster.

Tickets are selling briskly.

Then came the swearing- in of four new members:  David Gregory, Johnathan Hidalgo, Julian Joiris, Josh Rand, all graduating members of Albert Lasher’s SYM group. President Engstrand conducted the swearing-in with his wonderful booming voice. All in the Assembly then warmly greeted them. The meeting was adjourned and all gathered for our post-meeting entertainment.

This was a lecture by the fabulous John Born. He carefully lectured about a logical use of performance skills taking us through effect-by-effect. He taught us a natural way to handle a move, to make an effect flow seeming as if nothing unnatural was in the works. From his wonderful effect, ”Right on the Money,” to a beautiful linking ring routine, John Born flawlessly performed keeping us all on the edges of our seats.

After a short intermission he started his amazing coin work. The lecture was well attended with notables such as Ace Greenberg, last year’s Magician of the Year,  and S.A.M. Dean George Schindler in the audience. The lecture ended close to 11 pm and we adjourned to Sarges for a bite to eat and more conversation.
