December meeting report - Mentalism Night

New York, NY - Our MI President Don Engstrand called the December 2nd meeting of the Parent Assembly to order. General business was discussed and Committee reports were given. The highlight of the meeting was the announcement by First VP Ken Schwabe of the acts for the 97th Salute to Magic. The show will take place at 8 PM on April 8, 2006 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center here in Manhattan.  Ken announced the acts will be the Evasons, Norbert Ferré, George Saterial, Levent, and Chris Capehart. The Master of Ceremonies will be Gene Anderson. Information on these acts can be found on the web at http://www.sampa1.com/salute.htm.  Business having concluded the meeting was closed with rituals and we gathered for the after meeting show.

Following on last year’s great success Ross Wasielke produced this year’s “Mentalism Show”. Ross was the masterful MC as well. The first act was Rene Clement who gave his usual strong performance. He performed a wonderful effect in which a premonition of the number 27 appeared on a freely selected card. We were then treated to a performance by Torkova. He started by asking a spectator to merely think of a card and another a date of special importance. He then produced two small envelopes and holding them in plain view, asked them to name their selections. He tore open the envelopes and the matching card and date were revealed. Torkova received a great round of applause.

Ross then introduced “The Amazing Mr. E” which is the stage name of our President Don Engstrand. Channeling Ted Annemann he did a beautiful effect with 14 business cards. Many minds were read ending with an entertaining crossword puzzle book test with Ted Lee.  Just back from lecturing in Las Vegas Harvey Berg was next to perform.  He did one of his classic presentations in which he named three cards selected by members of the audience without touching or even seeing the deck. David Fattel from Brazil then performed a wonderful effect of mind control. He remembered each of the 43 members of the audience’s individual selected numbers and the name of an object repeating them at will. Brian Marks was next with a comical comparison of apples and oranges. Ted Lee the Mortician Magician performed his comical stylings as “Mental Lee”. He did a wonderful crossword book test as only he could do.

Ross performed the last act of the night. He selected an audience member to be taught the art of mentalism. With much comedy and fine handling Ross was the perfect closer for the show. We then adorned to Sarge's for an after show bite to eat and more discussion.
