January Meeting Report - Silly Billy Headlines Kid Show Night

David KayeNew York, NY - Friday January 6th was the Parent Assembly Number One’s meeting day, which started as usually with a gathering at the S.A.M. Magic Table as we have done since the early1940s. Eric DeCamps, Richard Bossong, Bob Friedhoffer, Jerry Oppenheimer, Rabbi Noach Valley and I shared magic over lunch at the Edison Hotel Café at 47th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue as we do every Friday from 12:30 to past 3 o’clock.

At 7:30 our General Meeting started at Soldiers’ and Sailors’ chaired by MI President Don Engstrand. Treasurer Jim Stranges and others gave reports. 1st VP Ken Schwabe reported on the upcoming Salute to Magic in April. It was announced that this month’s workshop would be a Tribute to Mike Bornstein who passed away just a year ago. Torkova and others will perform magic Mike taught them or he created over the years. The meeting ended at 8:15.

The after-meeting show was then started by its master of ceremonies was the amazing David Kaye. David also produced this wonderful show of magicians who perform especially for children. He spoke of a similar show by PA#1 in 1917 hosted by its then President Harry Houdini. He then quipped that one of our older audience members attended that show pointing Lenny Greenfader. Rolls of affectionate laughter occurred as magician Lenny is well known as the master of the verbal zinger.

David then blended into Silly Billy and his performance started this show that left the children giggling with happiness and no adult disappointed. After some fun with masks and a charming vanishing milk routine David introduction Jennifer Moyer aka Sheeza Witch. Jennifer with mixture of story telling and original magic stole the children’s hearts. Father Brennan and old friend of PA#1 performed several effects including a beautiful cut and restore rope trick. Then from Croatia we were treated to a performance by Josip Alajberg aka Jozo Bozo. Jozo’s act really got the children going with fast paced professional routines. Party Marty aka Party with Marty performed a very nice topsy-turvy bottle routine. Eric Goodman aka Rico the Clown then did a wonderful comic version of the professor’s nightmare that had us all laughing. The Last magician of the night, Alan Garber aka Magic Al came to us from S.A.M’s Long Island Mystics Assembly. From an endless banana production to doves appearing from thin air he was the perfect professional closing act for the evening.

But the actual closing act for the night was the very informative Panel Discussion hosted by David Kaye after a brief intermission. We all had a great night by no more than Past President Isaac Rodriguez’s and magician Michael Nguyen’s children in the front row.
