May Meeting Report - Berg's "Teach-A-Trick" A Hit!
New York, New York
Friday May 5th was the Parent Assembly Number One’s meeting day and as usually
magicians gathered at 12:30 for lunch at the S.A.M. Magic Table in the Edison
Hotel Café on 47th Street. From out of town we had Math-a-Magician Jerry Farrell
and longtime PA#1 member Albert Graham up for the summer from his Florida digs.
Rounding out the Table were Jerry Oppenheimer, Eric DeCamp, Derrick Chung, Bob
Friedhoffer, and myself. We shared magic as usual and talk drifted to the
workshop of two weeks ago. The workshop’s subject was Mentalism and Cards was
well attended. Harvey Berg presented his “Fantastic Voyage Card Effect”. Then
other compeers had a chance to performed many things as well.
After the Table we gathered for our monthly meeting at a new location Mount
Sinai at 98th Street and Madison Ave. in Manhattan. Although our meeting was to
start at 7:30 we were all there a little earlier to catch Harvey Berg’s brand
new Teach-a-Trick at 6:30. The over 20 people attending loved this new offering
by Harvey. It is a wonderful idea to each meeting day to perform one good effect
and teach it to all who come. It soon was 7:15 and we broke up to hold our
general meeting. As things came to order MI President Don Engstrand opened the
meeting. Business was discussed and reports were given. The nominating committee
read the nominations for new officers. 1st VP Ken Schwabe reported the success
of the Salute to Magic and the Nick Einhorn lecture. With the conclusion of
business the meeting was adjourned.
Board Member Frank Reyes, who also was the MC for the night, produced our after
meeting show this month. The Goldwurn Auditorium with its raked seating was a
perfect for showcasing these performers. Frank also performed his classic act
including his Pom Pom Stick Routine, which we all love. Paul Hsiao performed a
beautiful rope effect. Torkova once again graced us with his new mentalist act.
He is a master. Ted Lee had us rolling in the isles with his comical styling
next. The closer was magician Matae Khristov. From the doves appearing one by
one to what seemed like endless productions of parasols he cleanly and
authoritatively presented a beautifully routined performance. It was great to
see.
