Lovell and Kumar perform for PA#1
New York, New York
As usual over the summer magicians gathered on Fridays at 12:30 for lunch at the
S.A.M. Magic Table in the Edison Hotel Café on 47th Street. Many of the regulars
brought guests. Jerry Oppenheimer brought our Dean Sam Schwartz, Ken Krenzel
brought card expert Dr. Bill Nagler, and Sal Perrotta brought Kumar Pallana who
performed a Kumar the India opening for the Rat Pack in Las Vegas in the 1950s.
Kumar’s late in life second career is as an actor appearing in the films
Rushmore, Ten Items or Less and in 2004 with Tom Hanks in Speilberg’s film The
Terminal. The Table was quite lively and well attended.
We gathered for our monthly meeting on Thursday September 7, 2006 at Mount Sinai
at 98th Street and Madison Ave. in Manhattan. Although our meeting was to start
at 7:30 we were all there a little earlier to catch Harvey Berg’s Teach-a-Trick
at 6:30. The over 20 people attending loved this latest offering by Harvey. It
soon was 7:15 and we broke up to hold our general meeting. As things came to
order MI President Ken Schwabe opened the meeting. It was announced that in the
July Board meeting Tom Klem was elected Chairman of the Board. Business was
discussed and reports were given in this well run meeting. The meeting ended on
time and soon our aftermeeting event was to start.
2nd VP George Silverman, who also was the MC, was our producer. The theme of the
show was “Your Favorite Trick”. First to perform has Rene Clement with a
flawless handling of the Professor’s Nightmare. Picking Mike Nguyen daughter
Jessica to help him Ronnie Reckseit masterfully charmed us all as he had her
assist him with his “Choice or Chance” card effect. Harvey Berg selecting Dr
Jerry Waye did one of his amazing “never touched the deck” mentalism effects
called “Remote Control”. Doug Edwards performed his classic Dollar Bill
Penetration and other effects with great flourish. Special guest for the night
was Simon Lovell whose presentation and effects raised the bar to the
professional world. He did a very funny beautifully executed card effect. Six
cards were selected and signed and then buried in the deck. He then offered six
different wonderful ways of producing the selected cards. Our closer was the
legendary Ken Krenzel. Ken did two card miracles from his upcoming book. It was
a great night.
