Berg’s "Teach a Trick" Supersized

New York, New York

In October we found Bill Nagler returning to join the regulars at the S.A.M. Magic Table. The Table meets Fridays from 12:30 on for lunch at the Edison Hotel Café on 47th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue in Times Square. Dr. Ken Krenzel, Bob Friedhoffer, Sal Perrotta, Eric DeCamps, Richard Bossong, Rabbi Jack Glickman, Rabbi Noach Valley and Jerry Oppenheimer also regularly visited the Table this month.

Our monthly meeting was on Thursday October 5th, 2006 at Mount Sinai in upper Manhattan. It started with Harvey Berg’s “Teach-a-Trick” at 6:30. Harvey taught his effect called “Where Art Thou”. With his back to the audience Harvey asked volunteer Josh Rand to pass out four 5 x 7 blank foamcore boards. Each person was asked to draw something and return the boards to Josh to shuffle. Harvey divined the author of each to great applauses. It soon was 7:15 and it was time for our general meeting. As things came to order MI President Ken Schwabe opened the meeting. Business was discussed and reports were given in this well run meeting. The Assembly elected Isaac Rodriguez 1st VP and Tom Klem the new Treasurer. In the new business Board Member Andrew Cohen announced his new book was out called “On the Other Hand”. The meeting ended on time and soon our aftermeeting event was to start.

2nd VP George Silverman, who was also the MC, was our producer. The theme of the event was “Super Teach a Trick”. George promised to teach the greatest coin vanish and he did not disappoint. Providing coins for all of us to learn the move he masterfully performed and taught patiently and clearly. As Harvey Berg, Jim Stranges, Don Engstrand and others shared their effects Dr Ken Krenzel added insight to how the effects might be more compelling and their place in magic history. Ken also wowed us with a wonderful effect that was his variation on Dai Vernon’s “All Backs Routine”. The surprise of the night was young member Josh Rand’s wonderful card flourishes that he taught to all. By 10:30 this enjoyable night ended.
