Peter Samelson Performs for PA#1

New York, New York

On Friday December 8th Richard Bossong just coming from a performance with a Santa Suit over his shoulder was greeted warmly at the Magic Table by Rabbis Noach Valley and Jack Glickman. In this holiday season camaraderie is still the Table’s main product. The S.A.M. Magic Table meets Fridays from 12:30 on for lunch at the Edison Hotel Café on 47th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue in Times Square. In addition Eric DeCamps, Jerry Oppenheimer, Bob Friedhoffer, Isaac Rodriguez, and Derrick Chuck traded stories and moves enjoying each other’s company.

Our monthly meeting was held on December 7th at Mount Sinai in upper Manhattan. Harvey Berg’s Teach-a-Trick, which started at 6:30, was a lot of fun for all. By 7:15 it was time to start our general meeting. Our MI President Ken Schwabe opened the meeting. We welcomed two new members to the Assembly. We are happy to announce professional magician Bob Friedhoffer rejoined and new member and amateur magician Jim Kelly has joined. Jim Kelly is the owner of a Manhattan based company called The Sign Company. The meeting went quickly as Ken is a good manager of business and assembly affairs. The hour of our adjournment was announced and the meeting ended.

Our after meeting event was a show by the incomparable Peter Samelson. Fielding a question from the audience Mr. Samelson repeated it for all to hear. ''How did you get into magic?,'' with his smooth charming delivery he replied, ''I was tricked into it.'' The crowd chuckled for few believed anyone every tricked this master. Then began a performance of sophistication and yet quiet simplicity that was a joy to behold. As he performed wonder after wonder he whispered whose version of the effects he was performing to the audience of mostly magicians. My personal favorite was his version of the Classic Mutilated Umbrella Effect. That maybe because he had my friend Derrick Chung dancing on stage with the umbrella. He did a beautiful bit of work vanishing and reproducing a small paper ball with PNP Warren Kaps witnessing effects sitting on stage. He ended with his Snow Storm Effect producing flurries covering the first three rows of the auditorium. It was one of the finest performances by a magician I have ever seen.
